Hinder RUST: A One-Stop Rustproofing Product This means metals are transformed from being one of the strongest materials on earth to one of the weakest – making it a serious problem for everything from vehicles and guns, to manufacturing equipment, trains, trucks, boats and metal structures. Rust isn’t just unattractive to look at, it actually causes metal to decay, becoming flaky, weak and crumbly. It is usually red or black in color and the rusting process is often faster in certain conditions where it is exposed to salt, acids, chemicals and changes in temperature. When they combine, it is called oxidation and the chemical reaction produced causes ferric oxide to form – rust. Because iron and oxygen have opposite charges, they are attracted to one another, as if they are magnets. Rust is the result of a natural process where the iron in metals comes into contact with oxygen and water, causing it to corrode and deteriorate. We see rust on cars, trucks, the gutters of our homes, on boats and machinery – but what is rust and why does it start?
